An Arizona Teenager Gave a Grieving Stranger the Shoes Off His Feet. Then He Went Back.

Jordan Hope, 18, was driving to the bank in Maricopa, Ariz., when he noticed an older man whose shoes were falling apart. He handed over his own, then turned around, bought the man candy and lunch, and stayed to keep him company. A bystander's video made him briefly famous.

MARICOPA, Ariz. - Jordan Hope was on his way to the bank to deposit some money when he passed a Walgreens and noticed an older man crossing the parking lot. The man's shoes, Mr. Hope recalled, were barely on his feet. "I looked at his feet, and his shoes were like maybe a fourth on his foot," the 18-year-old told Arizona's Family. So he pulled over, took off his own slides and gave them to the stranger.

He did not know anyone was watching. A woman named Yareli Madrid recorded the exchange in the lot, near John Wayne Parkway and Smith-Enke Road, and posted it to Facebook, according to Arizona's Family, the Phoenix station KPHO, which first reported the story on Oct. 8.

"Watching this young man take the shoes off his own feet and give them to an older man who needed them truly touched my heart," Ms. Madrid wrote. "What makes it even more special is that he did it without anyone watching, without cameras, without expecting recognition or praise." She added a note to his parents: "If this is your son, you did something right."

The post drew hundreds of comments, the station reported, among them one from a person who recognized Mr. Hope as a former student. By the next day, he had learned he was the young man in the video. "I saw a truck facing me, and I did not know what they were doing," he said. His grandmother, he told FOX 10 Phoenix, sent the post to the family group chat. "I was like, whoa."

What the video did not show was what came after. "I just felt like God told me to go over there, turn around, and just give him some new slides," Mr. Hope said. He drove away, then felt pulled to go back. He found the man inside the store trying to buy candy and paid for it. It was then, Arizona's Family reported, that he learned the man's wife had died two weeks earlier.

"That honestly broke my heart," Mr. Hope said. "I just think he needed a friend. It's hard asking for help sometimes."

He offered to take the man to lunch at Culver's. A medical condition that causes severe swelling in the man's legs made it hard for him to climb into Mr. Hope's car, so Mr. Hope called him a rideshare, met him at the restaurant, picked up the food, followed him home and stayed a while to talk. "So he didn't feel that loneliness, you know?" he said.

The two have stayed in touch; Mr. Hope told Arizona's Family he checks in on the man by phone every day. FOX 10, which identified the man only as "Mister Roy," reported that a GoFundMe campaign Mr. Hope started to help with groceries and other expenses had raised more than $15,000 by Oct. 11. "Me and Mister Roy, we're just going to have a close friendship, get dinner sometime, go to church together," Mr. Hope said.

A recent high school graduate who runs his own computer-building business in Maricopa and Casa Grande, Mr. Hope credited his parents, his youth pastor and his faith. He also pushed back, gently, on the idea that his generation does not care. "I believe that we're hungrier and we just want to help as much as we can," he said.

His advice to everyone else was simpler. "Just be generous, people," he told FOX 10. "It's not that hard to be nice to people, and you never know what they're going through."
